Silvia Lucia Cohn, Maria Francesca de Tullio: L‘asilo, Naples (urbanize! Festival 2023, Vienna)

6 October 2023

L’asilo, former headquarters of the ›Forum of Cultures‹ in the historic center of Naples was occupied in 2012 by a collective of artists and cultural workers to claim new cultural policies, more attentive to redistributive principles, art workers’ dignity, and right to the city. Maria Francesca de Tullio and Silvia Lucia Cohn present l’asilo during the international good practice evening ›How to … Urban Commons!‹ at the urbanize! festival 2023 as an open space where a practice of shared and participatory management of a public space dedicated to culture is being consolidated. It remains a place dedicated to the production of art and culture as a common good. The current events at l’asilo include theater productions, cinema, yoga classes, and urban gardening. Shedding light on the legal and economic aspects of commoning, the talk provides insights into the regulations of ›Civic Uses‹.

Maria Francesca de Tullio is an activist at l’asilo and other international commons movements with a special reference to the creative use of law as well as a post-doc researcher in constitutional law.

Silvia Lucia Cohn is a graduate of the eco-social design master and an activist at l’asilo.
